Are you in search of a complete trail side maintenance bike kit that could easily fit in the pocket of your jersey or shorts, as well as in your top tube bag, backpack or saddle bag? Hero Kit has your back. Hero Kit is a company based out of Crested Butte, Colorado. The founder of the company, Jason Berv, is an avid cyclist who often found himself stopping to provide help to others who are experiencing mechanical issues with their bike on the trail. In turn, Jason has created a conveniently sized repair kit containing everything you need to solve the most common trail side issues efficiently on the go. Hero Kit provides cyclists with three main packages to choose from depending on what you are looking for: Road Bike Field Repair Kit, Mountain Bike Field Repair Kit and the Crash Pack – First Aid For Your Ride. Each kit provides the tools, instructions, and means that will empower mountain bikers of all levels to fix any common mechanical issues and get you back home safely. photo 1 We had the pleasure of testing out the most useful kit for bikepackers, the Mountain Bike Field Repair Kit, which includes the following:
  • 12 Function Multi Tool w/Chain tool
  • Planet Bike Tire Levers w/ tire patch kit
  • 24 Page Waterproof Field Repair Instruction Manual
  • 9 Speed KMC Replacement Chain Link
  • 10 Speed KMC Replacement Chain Link
  • Tyvek Tire Boot (torn tire patch)
  • Frame Bolt
  • Cleat Bolt
  • Multi Use “Tushy” wipe
  • Duct Tape
  • Gear Cable
  • 2 Zip Ties
  • ICE (In Case of Emergency) Card
  • LokSak Waterproof Bag
Hero Kit also offers a Super Hero version of their Mountain Bike kit, which proves to be an all-in-one solution for your next ride. The Super Hero Kit for Mountain Biking includes the high-quality tools and materials as mentioned above, with an added value of a tube, and a pump, all packaged neatly into a top tube bag from Planet Bike. The Super Hero Kit also includes a more detailed, 24 page water proof and tear proof Field Repair Instruction Manual. photo 3 photo 2 I would like to go into more detail about three of the included products in particular – the multi-tool, the hand pump and the tire levers. The multi-tool is the perfect, slim, all around bike tool for your distance ride. The tool has 6 different sizes of allen wrench, a philips, star and flat head screwdriver, and a sturdy chain tool. It is remains lightweight even with the amount of options it includes. The Mirco Propeller Air Supply hand pump that is included in the Super Hero Kit proves to work well on the trail. It is a compact pump that gets the job done when dealing with trailside maintenance such as a flat tire. The mini pump is compatible with both Presta and Schrader style valves. Lastly, the Plant Bike tire levers can be pulled apart to reveal 4 patches to patch a tube or tire when in need. I love the fact that they are right in the tire lever as small patch kits can often times get lost in a backpack or bag. The tire levers themselves are very stiff and seem as though they would told up against many aggressive uses. Hero Kit also makes a Crash Pack which is an excellent basic first aid kit for your pack. Hero Kit puts a lot of thought into what they include in their kits. The Crash Pack is one of the lightest and most affordable first aid kits on the market to include vital materials such as an irrigation syringe and Lidocaine antiseptic gel. This kit weights in a 3.3 ounces, and is under an inch thick. The Crash Pack includes the following:
  • Instruction manual
  • Triple Antibiotic Ointment
  • Lidocaine Antiseptic (2%) Burn Gel
  • 2 Adhesive Bandages
  • 2 Diphenhydamine Tablets (similar to Benadryl)
  • 2 Ibuprofen Tablets
  • 3 Butterfly Closures
  • 3×3 gauze pad
  • 3×2 “telfa” adhesive bandage
  • WoundStop wound dressing
  • 10cc Irrigation syringe
  • Exam gloves latex free and bio-hazard bag

In addition to the Hero Kit packages offered on their website, Hero Kit also offers a Refill Kit to keep your pack loaded with the essentials you need.
