Content by Courtney Shinn At 11am on Saturday, January 18th, 71 riders will depart from Tekapo on the Great Southern Brevet, a 1100km (683.5 miles) brevet ride around the South Island of New Zealand. Participants will have 8 days to complete the ride, but no doubt some will have it knocked over well before then.

It is a self-supported ride, so riders will have to carry their own gear, food and water, navigate and are only allowed to use services available to all other competitors. The course will take riders  through the Mackenzie High Country, the Lakes, Central Otago and Southland with a staggering 14,000m (45,931.8 feet) of climbing.

Riders are also required to carry a SPOT GPS and send a text message to organizers at certain points along the ride. The race can be followed on http://trackleaders.com/gsb14.
