The Bear Bones 200 is an endurance / bikepacking individual time trial that starts Saturday, October 11th. In its 4th year, the 200km route has remained the same until now. “There’s a new route this year which should prove much tougher than the previous one,” says Stuart Wright, route creator and adventure cyclist. Registration filled up again this year, showing the popularity of these types of events in the UK.

This is a self-supported race, by now many of you know what that means. Similar to all the other races of its kind, you are on your own, no outside help. On top of that standard rule, each rider is required to carry 4 simple items; sleeping bag, bivy or tent, front and rear lights, and a cell phone. Some will carry these items for emergencies, while others will surely be using them. Although the past few years the route has been the same with last year going in reverse, this year the route has changed a bit. The GPX file was not handed out until the 8th of October, making planning around the changes that more difficult. The route will primarily travel through the Cambrian Mountains. Stuart did say this about the changes, “some sections are also over very remote and over rough terrain which is often boggy and trackless, so there’s no shortage of hike-a-bike.”

Although there are resupply points along the way, riders will have to plan their resupply points strategically before shops close for the night. Weather will be another factor, as it typically is in the UK. It looks to be a wet start with rain on Saturday, maybe drying out for Sunday. Temperatures look to range anywhere from the mid 40’s to the mid 50’s. Finishing under the 24 hour mark is considered pretty fast, and most racers will complete the race in under 34 hours. Some are guaranteed to ride through the night, and others will take a more casual route. Either way it’s going to be a challenge. Stuart goes on to say “I imagine I won’t be everyone’s favorite person after the weekend.” We wish each and every racer a smooth ride!
